Kings and Queens – 30 Seconds to Mars

I’ve been listening to this one a lot lately. One of those songs that grabbed me right off the bat.

Listen here:

Lyrics here, more below:
Into the night
Desperate and broken
The sound of a fight
Father has spoken

We were the kings and queens of promise
We were the victims of ourselves
Maybe the children of a lesser God
Between Heaven and Hell
Heaven and Hell

Into your eyes
Hopeless and taken
We stole our new lives
Through blood and pain
In defense of our dreams
In defense of our dreams

We were the Kings and Queens of promise
We were the victims of ourselves
Maybe the Children of a lesser God
Between Heaven and Hell
Heaven and Hell

The age of man is over
A darkness comes and all
These lessons that we learned here
Have only just begun

We were the Kings and Queens of promise
We were the victims of ourselves
Maybe the Children of a Lesser God
Between Heaven and Hell

We are the Kings
We are the Queens
We are the Kings
We are the Queens

To me this is a battle song. A cry of desperation. I could look at this many ways but it seems to me that it speaks to abuse of some sort. That line ‘Father has spoken’ comes across as chilling to me.

The other line that really got me was ‘we stole our new lives through blood and pain’. Speaks of a bitter road but a splash of hope for the future. Survival despite the odds.

The only question that emerges is in the line ‘the age of man is over, a darkness comes…’. As much as that line speaks to a more all encompassing darkness over society, to me that is a call to the abusive parent saying YOUR time is over and even though we haven’t learned all the lessons from what you did, we will.

Give this one some time…it’s worth it!
