Powderfinger – Drifting Further Away

Powderfinger is a great band that, while they’ve had some North American success, never quite made the collective consciousness that they probably would have liked.

I first ran across the band back in 2000 or so with the song My Happiness (which is probably an entry in my top 100 songs of all time). I still yank that track out for a replay to this day).

The track Drifting Further Away is another classic. I’d heard it here and there but didn’t bother tracking it down until recently. I also noticed this was used in Grey’s Anatomy.

Lyrics here more below:
Don’t go too deep into the flood
Don’t stare too long, you’ll poison my love
Don’t shut me out, don’t hold it all in
Don’t let my venom get under your skin

‘Cause every word and every turn
Every sign points to your hurt
With every hour you’re drifting futher away

Come make your peace, come find your way
Come lay your wreath at the alter of change
Don’t lose your step, don’t break the bones
Don’t shoulder the burden out there on your own

‘Cause every word and every turn
Every sign points to your hurt
With every hour you’re drifting futher away

Don’t banish me then bid me home
Don’t tell me where I came undone
Don’t harbor love like it’s all your own
Don’t linger over what you’ve done
Don’t sink underneath the weight of
when you’re trying to carry way too much

You never should have let go
You could have joined the whole show
You never should have let go
You never should have let go

‘Cause every word and every turn
Every sign points to your hurt
With every hour you’re drifting further away
Now you’re drifting further away x3

An obviously touching song. Obviously a song of love and hurt. But when you listen to it, it has such a gospel feel to it. I could sit here and take lines like ‘don’t go too deep into the flood’ and make some easy religious references. Oddly I think that would be pointless and would take away the real meaning of the song.

To me the music implies the worship to his love for the woman. The prayer is for their relationship. You can say he’s asking God but really he’s asking her. And this is a classic heart song by any measure. Feel it.
