Bloodbuzz Ohio – The National

It’s always nice when a band you love gives you a bonus. Here’s another track from the upcoming High Violet album. A very typical sound from the National but very interesting lyrically.

Lyrics here, more below:
Stand up straight at the foot of your love
I lift my shirt up
Stand up straight at the foot of your love
I lift my shirt up

I was carried to Ohio in a swarm of bees
I never married but Ohio don’t remember me

Lay my head on the hood of your car
I take it too far
Lay my head on the hood of your car
I take it too far

I still owe money to the money to the money I owe
I never thought about love
When I thought about home
I still owe money to the money to the money I owe
The floors are falling out
From everybody I know

I’m on a bloodbuzz
Yes I am
I’m on a bloodbuzz

I’m on a bloodbuzz
God I am
I’m on a bloodbuzz

I was carried to Ohio in a swarm of bees
I never married but Ohio don’t remember me

I still owe money to the money to the money I owe
I never thought about love
When I thought about home
I still owe money to the money to the money I owe
The floors are falling out
From everybody I know

I’m on a bloodbuzz
Yes I am
I’m on a bloodbuzz

I’m on a bloodbuzz
God I am
I’m on a bloodbuzz

So a very strange set of lyrics. I went back and forth on the meaning but I think ultimately this really is about the state of the economy in a depressed region. It’s about watching people you care about suffer. Now you may say something about a buzz being a high. But I’m taking the bloodbuzz as anger and adrenaline as opposed to a good feeling. Love the mystery and confusion!

I always thought he was driven back to Ohio by forces beyond his control. No one he used to know there, esp his lover remembers him. he was glad to be back albeit under dire circumstances.
