Higher Than The Stars – The Pains of Being Pure At Heart

Listen here:

There seems to be a never-ending supply of great indie songs and bands. And we should all be thankful for that! This New York outfit have gotten some significant buzz in their short time together. This song is off their most recent release, an EP of the same name, which came out this past fall. More to come from this band I’m sure!

Lyrics here, more below:
Shit faced, fumbling in a dark place
Drinking in the last days
This street looks just like the next street
Bumble fuck on repeat

This time you should have stopped
But where’s the fun?
You should have stopped but where’s the fun?
Outcome the only friend you ever had
Is setting off with a rich son

So sure she was like a brother
‘Til you dropped another
So sure you kept it under covers
Until you knew you loved her

Now you can’t think straight because you’re not straight
In the back of her mother’s car
In the back of her mother’s car
No secret’s too safe and how you can’t stay
In the back of her mother’s car
In the back of her mother’s car

Now you can’t think straight because you’re not straight
In the back of her mother’s car
In the back of her mother’s car
No secret’s too safe and how you just can’t stay
Higher than the stars

Interesting. An obvious story line of boy and girl. Friends but he falls for her. I can’t tell if he ever told her or if she just fell for another. Either way, he’s messed up and trying to dull the pain by drinking it away. Keeping himself ‘higher than the stars’ as they say. The image that kept coming to mind as they kept singing about the back of her mother’s car is that she’s getting married and he’s the ‘maid of honour’ and they’re on the way to the ceremony. Ouch!
