G8/G20 In Toronto – An Eminence Front?

As many of you would have seen over this past weekend, our generally busy downtown Toronto became a war zone. And in a fit of what can only be defined as bizarre, Saturday the police let the anarchist protestors destroy everything in sight. And on Sunday? They decided to arrest everybody in sight?

Does this make any sense?

And what leaves me breathless is the dichotomy of the overall picture. Leaders, cloistered away, far from the maddening crowd whilst riots ensue.

I heard a few bars of this in a movie and I had forgotten about it. Lyrics seem appropriate though. Have a listen and review the lyrics:

The sun shines
And people forget
The spray flies as the speedboat glides
And people forget
Forget they’re hiding
The girls smile
And people forget
The snow packs as the skier tracks
And people forget
Forget they’re hiding.

Behind an eminence front
Eminence front – It’s a put on.

Come on join the party
Dress to kill
Won’t you come and join the party
Dress to kill.

The drinks flow
People forget
That big wheel spins, the hair thins
People forget
Forget they’re hiding
The news slows
People forget
The shares crash, hopes are dashed
People forget
Forget they’re hiding.

Behind an eminence front
Eminence front – it’s a put on
Come on join the party
Dress to
Come on join the party
Dress to
Come on join the party
Dress to
Come on join the party
Dress to kill
Dress yourself, dressed to kill.

The words here speak to several things including our financial times. And as you may have deciphered from the lyrics, the song is talking about how people hide from life’s realities. I think our leaders like to do that and watching the luxury and ridiculous treatment they receive versus the rioting and police clashes on the streets it seems fairly obvious.

We are living in a time where the middle is gone. There are haves and there are have-nots. And while we spend a billion dollars on security for a discussion that is all but decided in advance and is mostly done by the underlings anyway, how can you not ask what that billion dollars could do. Could these leaders not just have a secure video conference?

They will tell you that the relationships and the ‘press the flesh’ is critical to the discussions, the reality is these people come, hang out, argue for an hour and party and go home.

So this is just a shadowbox of life these days. The rich live in their mansions, growing ever more ridiculously rich while they pour a few dollars to their favourite ’cause du jour’. And how many of them would mingle with the masses? Gated communities like gated leaders make having to ‘feel’ the pain of many an unneeded thought.

So many politicians these days have staged events where ‘real people’ attend. But the truth is they are hand-picked sympathizers. Why? So leaders don’t have to answer to those they lead. What’s worse is how many people believe the narrative that they are ‘one of us’.

So apologies for the rambling annoyance. This stuff just makes me crazy. And I try not to let the insanity of life drag me down. But there are days you and I can’t help but be discouraged. Today is one of those days.
