Young Blood – The Naked And Famous

Watch/listen here:

The Naked and Famous are an indie band out of New Zealand who have been making a lot of noise. Their album Passive Me, Aggressive You has been doing very well since it was released in 2010. If you like this you may want to check out some other tracks – Punching In A Dream, and, Girls Like You.

Lyrics here, more below:
We’re only young and naive still
We require certain skills
The mood it changes like the wind
Hard to control when it begins

The bittersweet between my teeth
Trying to find the in-betweens
Fall back in love eventually
Yeah yeah yeah yeah

Can’t help myself but count the flaws
Claw my way out through these walls
One temporary escape
Feel it start to permeate

We lie beneath the stars at night
Our hands gripping each other tight
You keep my secrets hope to die
Promises, swear them to the sky

The bittersweet between my teeth
Trying to find the in-betweens
Fall back in love eventually
Yeah yeah yeah yeah

As it withers
Brittle it shakes
Can you whisper
As it crumbles and breaks
As you shiver

Count up all your mistakes
Pair of forgivers
Let go before it’s too late
Can you whisper
Can you whisper
Can you whisper
Can you whisper

The bittersweet between my teeth
Trying to find the in-betweens
Fall back in love eventually
Yeah yeah yeah yeah

The bittersweet between my teeth
Can you whisper
Trying to find the in-betweens
Can you whisper
Fall back in love eventually
Can you whisper
Yeah yeah yeah yeah

This is one of those songs. Sometimes something so small just grabs you and hangs on. The line ‘bittersweet between my teeth’ just really grabbed me. As a dad and former teenager, the lingering effects of mistakes can get a hold of you sometimes.

The song can be about a relationship that is falling part and both sides know it. But I see it as part of those painful years of the late teens where everything changes. All so fluid, dynamic and scary. And hanging on to what you know, for dear life, is fruitless with barrage of events. Understanding that you cannot stay in this time and place. And looking forward to what comes next, despite the pain of leaving it all behind.
