U2: Kindergarten Achtung Baby – One

As many of you are aware, the 20th anniversary box sets for Achtung Baby were released this week. There was a disc included in the Uber box called the Kindergarten Achtung Baby. This disc is track for track match to the original album but the tracks are preliminary versions that did not end up as the final product. This was the one piece of the most expensive box that caught my attention.

I have been lucky enough to listen to this disc several times. Over the next little while I will try to do a direct comparison of each track. The third track is One. Here is the audio for the ‘Baby’ version:

The lyrics are identical and I list those below the released version.

This is probably the most boring track on the Kindergarten disc. The lyrics are identical. The vocal as far as I can tell is the final vocal edit. I guess this seems more like a toddler version as opposed to a baby version! That said, two things were interesting to me.

First was the acoustic treatment this was given. It actually accentuates the song somewhat and gives it a different feel. The released version is heavier, almost smothering in its depth. Beautifully so I might add. The acoustic guitar up front actually takes some of that edge off for me. I don’t like it better but it lightens the darkness of the song a little.

The second thing that is interesting to me is that with this version it appears the lyrics and vocal were finalized in advance of the song hitting the final version. Most of what I’ve read would indicate Bono normally will fit the lyrics and vocal to the music so this seemed a bit odd to me. I may have this wrong. The song might be complete and the hard edges were added in edit. But I feel like they were just finalizing the song here and perhaps the decision was made to go back at it and add more depth. I have no idea. Just seems like an interesting possibility.

Here’s the released video (Anton Corbijn version) and lyrics:

Is it getting better
Or do you feel the same
Will it make it easier on you now
You got someone to blame
You say…

One love
One life
When it’s one need
In the night
One love
We get to share it
Leaves you baby if you
Don’t care for it

Did I disappoint you
Or leave a bad taste in your mouth
You act like you never had love
And you want me to go without
Well it’s…

Too late
To drag the past out into the light
We’re one, but we’re not the same
We get to
Carry each other
Carry each other
Have you come here for forgiveness
Have you come to raise the dead
Have you come here to play Jesus
To the lepers in your head

Did I ask too much
More than a lot
You gave me nothing
Now it’s all I got
We’re one
But we’re not the same
Well we
Hurt each other
Then we do it again
You say
Love is a temple
Love a higher law
Love is a temple
Love the higher law
You ask me to enter
But then you make me crawl
And I can’t be holding on
To what you got
When all you got is hurt
One love
One blood
One life
You got to do what you should
One life
With each other
One life
But we’re not the same
We get to
Carry each other
Carry each other

It sounded a bit John Lennon(ish) to me when I first listened.
