U2: Kindergarten Achtung Baby – Mysterious Ways

As many of you are aware, the 20th anniversary box sets for Achtung Baby were released recently. There was a disc included in the Uber box called the Kindergarten Achtung Baby. This disc is track for track match to the original album but the tracks are preliminary versions that did not end up as the final product. This was the one piece of the most expensive box that caught my attention.

I have been lucky enough to listen to this disc several times. Over the next little while I will try to do a direct comparison of each track. The eighth track is Mysterious Ways. Here is the audio for the ‘Baby’ version:

Johnny take a walk
With your sister the moon
Let her pale light in
To fill up your room
You’ve been living underground
Eating from a can
You’ve been running away
From what you don’t understand…
Love

Fear of falling
Fear of not jumping
Fear of failing
Fear of winning

It’s all right, it’s all right, it’s all right
She moves in mysterious ways
It’s all right, it’s all right, it’s all right
She moves in mysterious ways
O-o-oh ana na na

Lana take a break
You’ve been staring at the sun
Don’t you know they can’t make it
With everyone

To touch is to heal
To hurt is to steal
If you want to turn her on
Then just say what you feel it

You fear God
You fear no one
You fear love
You fear a woman

It’s all right, it’s all right, it’s all right
She moves in mysterious ways
It’s all right, it’s all right, it’s all right
She moves in mysterious ways
O-o-oh
It’s all right, it’s all right, it’s all right
You lift my days and you light up my nights
ooooo love

One day you will look… back
And you’ll see… where
You were held… how
By this love… while
You could stand there
And not move on the moment
Move through the feeling

It’s all right, it’s all right, it’s all right
She moves in a miracle wave
It’s all right, it’s all right, it’s all right
She moves in mysterious ways
It’s all right, it’s all right, it’s all right
We move through a miracle day
It’s all right, it’s all right, it’s all right
Spirit moves in mysterious ways

oh love love
ah love I
You lift my days
And you light up my nights
oooo

Well, i don’t know about you but that was quite the mix and mash!  Musically the song is very close to the final product but that guitar solo sequence about two-thirds through was bizarre.  I actually kind of liked that bang and clatter of the sonic madness.

And the vocals on this version were just strange.  Bono sounding like he was trying out a smooth groove while chorus sounded like they were attempting a small gospel chorus or something!  Maybe more street acapella chorus.  Whatever it was, it was strange.

Once again I was struck by the lyrical smack that comes when the familiar is suddenly unfamiliar.  To touch is to heal, to hurt is to steal.  No problem.  If you want to turn her on just say how you feel????  What?  Oh man, didn’t know whether to laugh or cry at that one!

That, along with the two stanzas of fear that unsurprisingly got tossed by the end, really threw off the song.  It was like the very vibrant music was at odds with a very mellow sounding Bono.  Very interesting at any rate!

I’m too lazy to check this right now but I think I remember somewhere along the line this song may have been called Miracle Days in the very early going.  And would explain the line that stayed to this point towards the end of the song.

Overall this particular version feels like a slice of song development just passed the two-thirds to three-quarters complete stage.  Gives just a little more insight into the process.  When the band says that writing songs only works for them when there is struggle, you can see it everywhere on this disc and this song is a prime example.

The sounds gets defined and refined while Bono struggles to make the words feel like the music.  The tone and tenor changes by the minute and ideas get added and subtracted a thousand times along the way.  It really doesn’t matter if you love or hate U2.  If you see what they go through, you cannot help but admire the process they put themselves through each and every time.

Johnny take a walk
With your sister the moon
Let her pale light in
To fill up your room
You’ve been living underground
Eating from a can
You’ve been running away
From what you don’t understand…
Love

She’s slipping
You’re sliding down
She’ll be there
When you
hit the ground

It’s all right, it’s all right, it’s all right
She moves in mysterious ways
It’s all right, it’s all right, it’s all right
She moves in mysterious ways
O-o-oh

Johnny take a dive
With your sister in the rain
Let her talk about the things
You can’t explain
To touch is to heal
To hurt is to steal
If you want to kiss the sky
Better learn how to kneel
On your knees boy

She’s the wave
She turns the tide
She sees the man inside the child
Yeah

It’s all right, it’s all right, it’s all right
She moves in mysterious ways
It’s all right, it’s all right, it’s all right
She moves in mysterious ways
Love
It’s all right, it’s all right, it’s all right
lift my days, light up my nights
Love

One day you will look… back
And you’ll see… where
You were held… how
By this love… while
You could stand there
You could move on this moment
Follow this feeling

It’s all right, it’s all right, it’s all right
She moves in mysterious ways
It’s all right, it’s all right, it’s all right
She moves in mysterious ways
O-o-oh

Oh love
Oh love, lover
Move you
The spirit moves in mysterious ways
Baby love me
Move
Baby love me
Move you
Baby love me
Move with it
She moves with it

Lift my days, light up my nights
