In Came The Flood – Wintersleep

Watch/listen here:

Wintersleep is a great Canadian indie band based out of Halifax, Nova Scotia. I first came across them a few years ago with their great hit Weighty Ghost from Welcome To The Night Sky. A band worth pursuing whose following grows every day. Other great tracks include Archaeologists and Blood Collections. Their new album Hello Hum promises to take them to another level.

Lyrics here, more below (these are likely wildly wrong so send any corrections!):
He drops us off
The gods have come
He’s been and gone
Let’s kill the law

He turns and dies so why
Why would I?
So you will try
To ever believe it

It’s obvious
So come to your senses
Take a ride
To the top, to your limits

You’re no fool
Just a cruel, cruel animal
Are you so cruel
A cruel, cruel animal

In came the flood
In came the flood
And everything
Is as it was

And they could dance
Hooked on out of this
The darkened sky
The same sign you just sent

It’s obvious
So come to your senses
Take a ride
To the top, to your limits

You’re no fool
Just a cruel, cruel animal
Are you cruel
Such a cruel, cruel animal

Die, die, die, die, die

Okay, so I think I can say with some obviousness myself that I can be a cruel, cruel animal. Damn you Wintersleep for knowing it!!! I was sure when I saw the title of this new track that this would be about faith. Wasn’t quite ready for the direction. Bearing in mind there were big parts of the lyrics I only took a best guess at, I have to say I felt they were telling us that we can do this ourselves. No need for the hand from above. This may be one that some liner notes might clarify or someone with a much better ear and equipment could pass along some updates. Suffice it to say I do like to dance on occasion to the darkened sky. Join me will you!

  3. John says:

    He prophesied
    That God would come
    He’s been and gone
    Left you alone

    His tongues and eyes
    Oh why, why would I?
    So you wouldn’t try
    To ever believe it

    It’s obvious
    So come to your senses
    Take a ride
Through the times you live in

    You’re no fool
    Just a cruel, cruel animal
    Are you so cruel?
You’re such a cruel, cruel animal

    In came the flood
    In came the flood
    And everything
    Is as it was

    A vacant death
    Called dawn out of bed
    The darkened sky
The same sky you dressed in

    It’s obvious
    So come to your senses
    Take a ride
Through the times you knew best

    You’re no fool
You’re such a cruel, cruel animal
    Are you so cruel?
You’re such a cruel, cruel animal
