North By Northeast


Anyone with an interest in music, especially in North America, will surely be aware of the massive music event held in Austen, Texas each year called South By Southwest (SXSW). You can learn more about that here.

In more recent years a similar event is held in Toronto, Ontario (in Canada for you newbies) by the incredible appropriate name of North By Northeast (NXNE). Get a map and you’ll see why! If you want to just explore, their main page is here.

This year’s event is being held June 10-16, 2013. The music and film event includes 800 bands and 40 films.

As well there in NXNE Interactive (NXNEI) which includes an exploration of digital media, culture, web, music, film, marketing and so on. The interactive portion of NXNE runs June 12-16, 2013. A list of topics covered includes:
Responsive Design • Starting a Start-up • Crowdsourcing • Collaboration • Grant Writing • Pitching • Licensing • Self Publishing & Distribution • Online Tools • Entrepreneurship • Social Media • Marketing • Community Building • Interactive Storytelling • Influencers • Branding • Immersive Design • Future of Advertising • YouTube • Design Metrics • Innovation.

If you are in a band and you want the opportunity to play at NXNE this year, submissions are open until February 28, 2013. You can follow the process through from their submissions page here.

Just a few of the major acts booked for this year’s event include: Flaming Lips, Bad Religion, Of Montreal, Protest The Hero, Portugal The Man, Hollerado, Matthew Good, Bran Van 3000, Matt Mays and so many more.
